Sections, Categories, and Articles Explained

The way Joomla! is organized is pretty easy to understand.

This is the basic structure:

1. Section: the top level.
2. Category: the second level.
3. Articles: which are in Categories.

You can have multiple categories within sections and multiple articles within categories.

Click on the Section icon in the dashboard.

You'll see that there are two sections already set up - News and Blog.

Now use the drop-down menu to go to the category manager.

You'll see that two categories, Latest News and Newsflash are in the News section.

Now open the Article manager from the same drop-down menu.

In the Article Manager you'll see all the articles currently in the site. You also see what Section they are in and the corresponding category.

You can filter the articles by Sections and Categories using the filters along the top right.

Or search for an individual article by name using the filter to the left.
